LivePools boss says pocket squares are a forever hit with suits; frowns at the sight of sneakers

Gaurav Assomull said that he pairs his suits with handcrafted Asteri Man footwear.

Gaurav Assomull, co-founder, LivePools, on how once you find the one, it’s unlikely you’ll choose another.

First suit

“I wore a suit for the first time when I was at a boarding school in the UK. I was really young and it had been made for me. I don’t think I would have been able to fit into a hand-medown suit as I started wearing one at a really young age.”

The count

“I own around 10 suits and I wear a suit at least twice a week. That number tends to go up or down depending on the occasion. I wear suits that have been designed by British designer Ozwald Boateng — the suit I have from here is my favourite at the moment. I have been wearing his suits for at least a decade now. Locally, NM Studios in Mumbai have made me some really amazing suits and blazers in recent times.”

Fit first
“When it comes to suits, it’s not always about the brand, it’s about the fit. Once you find a brand that fits you well, it’s unlikely you will wear another brand. I like pinstripe suits mostly. However, if a man was to invest in just one suit, I think a classic navy blue or a charcoal grey suit are good choices. They are the most versatile and a necessity in a man’s wardrobe.”

Suit rules
“I pair most of my suits with handcrafted Asteri Man footwear. These can be customised with embroidery, designs and initials. One accessory that always works well with a suit is a matching pocket square. I don’t think the trend of wearing sneakers and suits is a good one. In fact, I think men should never wear sneakers with a good suit.”

Suit suave
“One person who I think looks good in a suit is Ed Westwick.”

Accessorise right
“I prefer to stick to the classics such as a good watch and a nice pair of cufflinks.”

A classic bandhgala. It is a perfect ambassador of Indian style with its inherent lineage of Indian heritage, in a contemporary world. What makes the bandhgala interesting is that it can be worn differently in different parts of the world —be it with breeches, or with denims.
