Housejoy founder Sanchit Gaurav is looking forward to watching a movie in the theater once the pandemic restrictions ease.
Housejoy founder Sanchit Gaurav is back in his Bengaluru office and he couldn’t be happier. “It felt great to step out of the house after such a long time and interact with colleagues face-to-face. It was quite rejuvenating to get out of the video call interactions for a change.”

Back to the Office
“The transition from home to office has been quite smooth for all of us. This has been possible primarily due to the fact that even when we worked from home, we followed a proper schedule. From attending video meetings in the morning to follow up calls, everything was done the way it was had we been on the premises. This ensured that mentally there was never any difference in our approach to work. We worked from Monday to Friday and celebrated on Friday evening. Now that about 50 per cent of the team is back to the office, we continue to follow the same schedule.”

Pivoting When Needed
Gaurav says the biggest lesson the pandemic has taught him is how to turn adversity into an opportunity, especially since they were one of the first to be impacted.

The pandemic has taught Sanchit Gaurav the trick to turn adversity into an opportunity.

“Since we are into the business of construction, renovation, interiors, and home maintenance, we were the first ones to be hit by the lockdown,” said Gaurav. “Once the lockdown was announced, we started working in alternate areas such as home delivery of groceries to meet customer demand and ensure business continuity. We also undertook a number of socially beneficial activities such as providing free fumigation services in Bangalore in association with the Government of Karnataka and BJP MP Tejasvi Surya. We are also an active part of the Karnataka Government COVID taskforce and ACT Grants through which we tied up with SRL Diagnostics and Portea Medical to launch mobile COVID testing camps in the city.”

“As the lockdown was lifted in phases, we saw an increased demand for our in-house beauty and maintenance services. The only disruption was in terms of on-ground construction activities that are also now back on track now. Staying focused, having a business continuity plan and encouraging our teams to think out of the box has helped us make the most of the situation and cope.”

While business has adapted to the new normal, Gaurav misses going to the theatre and hopes to do that soon. “(Post the pandemic), I would love to watch a movie in a theater. It has been a long time and I miss the experience a lot.”

“For office culture to revive and survive, office spaces are looking at a pretty drastic alteration of layouts and design,” says Pankaj Poddar, the co-founder of Hipcouch, a Mumbai based Interior Design Company. He says the new normal will also see some reversal.

“We will see the reversing of very hot trends of open offices and shared desks.” While we wait for the official decrees, here’s what the rough framework is looking like so far according to Poddar.

Since offices will not be at maximum capacity, there is scope to ensure enough physical distance between two desks by simply skipping one in the middle. At the very least, or in addition, fitting a screen around each desk is also a good way to achieve this. Hot desking is now a no-go.

The way 2020 is going, it’s hard to predict anything this year with any accuracy, so we have no idea what monsoon will bring, but opening as many windows as you possibly can will increase ventilation and we suspect that a lot of offices will consider the option. Too hot? Your office may need to get a humidifier system in place to create a tougher climate for viruses.

A strict limit on how many people can crowd into a lift at one time may save you some of that awkward elevator silence, but it also means a longer wait every time you want to move from one floor to another. Whether this is good news to you or exactly the opposite, travelling for business will see a drastic drop, replaced instead by Zoom calls. Travelling anywhere is probably unwise for at least the next several months anyway, even as domestic flights are slowly opening up. Also, obviously don’t count on any outstation off-sites anytime soon.
