Engineers as interns is an idea that needs some doing: Experts

Since data shows as much as 60% of the more than 8 lakh who graduate from the country’s engineering colleges every year remain unemployed, some have expressed doubt over state’s expertise in implementing internship programmes.

BENGALURU: The budget proposal to create internships opportunities with local bodies will help tackle the engineering unemployment in the country, experts said. But some also expressed doubt over state’s expertise in implementing internship programmes.

As much as 60% of the more than 8 lakh who graduate from the country’s engineering colleges every year remain unemployed, according to data from the All India Council for Technical Education.

The reason for this often is inadequate skills. Indian IT companies, a major employer of engineers, have to spend months bringing their technology skills up to par.

“Internship opportunities to fresh engineers with urban local bodies is a welcome move, which will provide fresh graduates with on-the-job experience which is a key element as it involves real world practical learning,” Nasscom president Debjani Ghosh said.

“This practical experience will enhance the skill quotient of the youth of the country and further help build a skilled workforce of the future.”
