KOLKATA: South Eastern Railway has decided to set up a multi-disciplinary Business Development Unit (BDU) to increase its share in freight traffic movement. The target is to double the volume of freight traffic in SER by 2024.

The BDU will be set up in consultation with the Railway Board. The aim of this initiative is to raise SER's share in traditional bulk commodities movement and also to generate higher business by carrying miscellaneous non bulk goods. The BDU will comprise senior officials from various departments at the zonal level, co-ordinated by the Chief Freight Transportation Manager, an official statement said.

Similar BDUs will also be set up at the divisional levels and will be co-ordinated by Senior Divisional Operations Manager.

The main objective of such BDUs would be to put forward lucrative offers to fetch business from traders and industries through frequent interactions with them.

The BDUs will be operational at the Railways Board level with a view to facilitate and give clearance to the proposals received by the zonal railways, the statement added.
