Railways dials e-retailers for on-demand parcel trains

The move could help online retail giants such as Amazon and Flipkart with their shipment operations that have been disrupted by the lockdown.

NEW DELHI: Indian Railways is offering on-demand parcel train service to online retailers and businesses to ensure uninterrupted movement of essential commodities throughout the country.

The move could help online retail giants such as Amazon and Flipkart with their shipment operations that have been disrupted by the lockdown.

The railway ministry said on Thursday that industries, e-commerce companies and all interested groups, organisations, individuals and prospective loaders can contact railway officials at the zonal level to avail of this service. It said contact details of railway officials at various stations have also been circulated and made available to facilitate this.

An official ET spoke with said all major e-commerce players have been approached.

“Zonal railways are reaching out to prospective clients through various modes of communication including advertisements,” the statement said.

The national transporter has halted passenger trains but has kept freight trains running to ensure supply of essential commodities. While freight operations are meeting the need of bulk transportation of essential goods like food grains, edible oils, salt, sugar, coal, cement, milk, vegetables and fruits, etc., parcel trains are transporting items that need to be delivered in smaller quantities, the ministry said.
