BHUBNESHWAR: National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) has been granted a 30 year lease for the Utkal-D coal block. The Government of Odisha in notification dated 16 April granted it rights to an area of 301.28 hectares covering villages of Kosala, Nandichood, Similisahi and Raijharan under the Chendipada tehsil of Angul District.

In a statement, the Mines Ministry aluminium maker said it was looking to operationalise the coal block in financial year 2020-21 with an initial production capacity of 2 million tonnes per year. The block has mineable reserve of 101.68 million tonnes.

“For a power intensive industry like aluminium, it is very essential to have a secure supply of coal. I hope with the mining lease in place, it will usher in a new era of development for the company”, said NALCO CMD, Sridhar Patra.

The Utkal-D block was first allocated to NALCO in May 2016. The aluminium maker said it was also in the process of obtaining a mining lease for the Utkal- E coal block allocated to it in May 2016. When both are eventually operationalised they would bring to Nalco 4 million tonnes of coal annually.
