Covid vaccination: 11 States say yes to Covaxin

Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Maharashtra, Bihar, Karnataka, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Andhra Pradesh and Haryana are the states which have given nod to Covaxin.

New Delhi: Eleven states, of which five are opposition-ruled, have agreed to deploy Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin in the first phase of the Covid-19 vaccination programme, covering 10 million healthcare workers beginning January 16. For now, sources said, every state will dedicate six centres to Covaxin.

Those familiar with the details told ET that this would roughly work out to 3-5% of the vaccination centres depending on the size of the state. These numbers could increase as the public immunisation programme broadens its scope and reach.

Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Maharashtra, Bihar, Karnataka, Odisha, Uttar Pradesh, Assam, Andhra Pradesh and Haryana are the states which have given the nod to Covaxin. Ten of these states have already received 20,000 doses of Covaxin, while Assam has so far got 12,000 doses.

Tamil Nadu health secretary J Radhakrishnan confirmed to ET that they had already identified six centres from its list of 160 vaccination sites for administering Covaxin. A Delhi government spokesperson also confirmed that of its 81 vaccination centres, six will be dedicated for the Bharat Biotech vaccine.

According to official sources, this is just the first tranche and more doses would be based on the response. The decision to allow Covaxin to be administered had come under sharp political focus over the last two weeks with opposition-ruled states like Chhattisgarh, Punjab and Jharkhand speaking out against the move. West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee too had raised the issue of safety of Covid-19 vaccines in the Prime Minister’s meeting with chief ministers on Monday. However, health secretary Rajesh Bhushan and Niti Aayog member VK Paul have maintained that both the vaccines are safe.
